My day yesterday, just needed to share: I had 2.5 hours of camp meetings (which were totally overwhelming), carpool both ways, side van door broke and is constantly beeping like the door is open except that it is closed. I went to Big 5 to get Andrew some tee ball pants and realized my wallet was at home. Homework with Rachel took forever and ended in tears and her saying she hated me. Her bad behavior meant me needing to supervise her all afternoon and no time to make dinner. Brandon was late getting home, so I had to haul all the kids back to Big 5, then to Peter piper for tee ball pics - all in the constantly beeping van. But the funny thing was that Kendall won the jackpot on one of the games and got 2500 tickets! Ha!! It was quite the day!

Just a "regular" day

Grandpy visits
Val had a free flight to use, so he came down a spent a weekend with us in March. The boys golfed and went to a Cubs game. The kids were most excited to have him here to tell them his stories all about growing up in Snowflake!
We were just getting off Spring Break, and Grandma & Grandpy treated our family to go see the movie, "Cinderella". I loved the message, "Have courage & be kind."
Story that by Rachel & Grandpy Val:
It was a dark and stormy night. We saw Godzilla. He was stomping on buildings and flinging around airplanes. We said, "Stop doing that, you oversized, malicious lizard!"
But he didn't listen.
I looked up at him and asked him, "Does your mother know what you are doing? Do you think she would be proud of you?"
He thought and said, "I don't have a mother. I don't know if she would be proud if I did have one." And so, we took him to our house and put him in the back yard.
We told him to not go anywhere, but he did. He went to Paris and found a female fire-breathing lizard and married her. He knocked over the Eiffel Tower, and that's where they lived. His wife had a baby that they named Zillacita. They lived happily ever after. The End.

Kiddies
I have GOT to write more before I forget all these little details. Pretty soon, they won't want to be around me anymore and I will be crying about the fact that they aren't little anymore!
Kendall (2.5)
- She is a little princess and knows it! She loves to pick her outfits everyday, and usually picks her fanciest Sunday dresses for everyday play.
- She is communicating so well and speaking in full sentences. An example that comes to mind is when I brought her to a lunch date with someone I visit teach and we were at this cute bakery with lots of goodies. Kendall refused to eat the soup I got her, but willing ate a giant sugar cookie. Then she said very matter of factly, "I want another cookie." To which I responded, "No" and then she had a full blown crying tantrum on the floor about it. :)
- Right now, she loves reading. Just give her a stack of books and she is happy for quite awhile. I brought her to a camp meeting with me last month, and brought a stack of books for her to read and also brought "Frozen" for her watch, but was only going to use that as a last resort. She literally sat through an hour and a half meeting and just sat quietly pretend-reading her books. She made us both look SO good that day! And I had them all fooled. ha ha
- We recently got bunk beds in the girls' room, but are also keeping the crib in there until we are done with it. She LOVED the idea of sleeping in the big girl bed on the bottom bunk and we decided to give it a try. She did amazingly and has fully transitioned to the big girl bed at night. I still require naps to be taken in the crib because I don't want to risk anything with losing that precious nap time. The funny thing about her bed, is that she doesn't think she can get out of her bed without permission. Amazing! When she wakes up, she waits in bed chatting and reading until I come and tell her she can get out and she rarely comes out of her room when going to sleep. It is like someone has a magic spell on this child when it comes to sleeping - she is our best sleeper by far!!
- We love it when it says I love ___ ; her version is "I yuve Mickey!" or "I yuve pawties (parties)" / We also love it when she says look = yook "Yook at the moon, mommy!"
- One night during her prayers, without any prompting, she prayed for the BYU Cougars!
- Kendall's best friend is Brooklyn Gunnell who just turned 3 and lives just a few houses down the street. I am surprised at how close they are at this age, but they are starting to do really well with little play dates and they prefer to have each other when playing at the park.
Andrew (4.5)
- Sweet Andrew says "I love you" constantly and is very loving and cuddly. He loves to sit on laps, especially at church, and if he had his wish, he would love to sleep next to someone every night. But he has also informed me that he and his friends do NOT like kissing. He will give me a kiss on the cheek only for special occasions. We had some very serious conversations about whether or not he will have to kiss his wife. I told him that it will be his choice and that he will get to choose. He thought that was a great answer and says that he will not kiss the person he marries. :) I bet he will change his mind about kissing!
- Andrew has some fears and is scared of being alone (particularly in the middle of the night), so we are working through them slowly and trying to be patient with him. Ever since cousin Ellie passed last August, Andrew has had a lot of questions about death. He is very concerned about who in our family will die first and if he will be left alone, and when people will die. I don't blame him, because now the answer, "we will die when we are old" doesn't really cut it anymore. Ellie taught us all invaluable lessons and we still think about her daily. The kids still pray for Ellie in Heaven, and they have the most beautiful testimony about how she is with Jesus and they know that they have to make good choices in order to live with Jesus again.
- A few months ago, Andrew was waking up and bothering us with different issues and asking for people to lay by him about 4 times each night (10p, 12p, 3a, 5a), and it was wearing on us! We set some serious ground rules, and it is finally starting to pay off, but it has been months of training him. First, no one is allowed to lay next to him anymore. We sit outside his door in the hallway while he falls asleep. Then, if he wakes up and can't go back to sleep on his own, then he can come sleep on our floor, but is NOT allowed to wake us up. He ends up on our floor every single night at this point (we think he comes in around 1am). Then, if the clock says 5 or 6, he can get into bed with us, but no sooner!
- Wintertime brought a new wakeup time for Andrew. He was sleeping in until 6:30 or 6:45 for two whole months. Now it's back to 6am. It was fun while it lasted!
- Andrew's best friends are Maddox Tompkinson, Ben Nelson, Emmitt & Fisher Hawks. He asks for play dates daily, and taking away a play date is the most effective punishment to date!
Rachel (6.5)
- Rachel is very thoughtful and loves to write kind notes to everyone. Her teachers (at school and church) love her and she seems to be very friendly to everyone at school. She is the best little kiss-up and following in her mother's footsteps (voted as biggest kiss-up senior year). Seriously though, she knows how to play the game and is very polite to adults especially.
- She recently told us that she would like to sing a solo in Sacrament Meeting. We decided to start a little smaller and arranged for her to sing in Primary. She sang, "If the Savior Stood Beside Me" and I thought it went pretty well, but it's hard to know since I am a little bit bias.
- For as sweet as she is to everyone at school and church, you'd be surprised to know that she is not very kind to Andrew. We are constantly reminding her to "treat her family like she treats her friends". She mothers him, and constantly tries to manipulate the situation. I think she is jealous of the relationship that Andrew & Kendall have, since they are very close and get to play all day while she is at school. Kendall would rather play with Andrew, be comforted by him, hold his hand, etc. When Rachel is home and playing with them, she likes to be the boss! She easily assumes the leadership role in any play setting with younger children and is just plain bossy (also takes after her mother in this way - as the first child, I was also very bossy!). All this causes problems between her and I because I have to stay on her case all afternoon. Between all that and trying to help her become a math master at school, we are sometimes at each others throat by the time daddy walks in the door!
- She taught Andrew her school's song, "Ishikawa Dragons" (tune of "Puff the Magic Dragon") and he knows it word for word and even sung it for his preschool's talent show. Rachel regrets teaching him the song because he sings it all the time now. Everytime he sings it, she covers her ears and gets very upset and runs away! Even after multiple conversations and practicing how to handle this particular situation, for some reason, it always sets her off.
- She is mostly a good sleeper - goes to bed around 8pm and most of the school year, has woken up around 6:45-7am. But she always wakes up extra early on Saturday mornings because she says she is excited that it is her day off! She's usually up by 6am on the weekends - I think that is so funny! I told her that instead of turning on Netflix on Saturday mornings that we should start with chores, so that she sleeps in longer!
- She is an excellent reader, and is reading the Fairy chapter books and Junie B Jones all by herself. She is making some good progress with math, but it does not come as easily as reading has and she's not convinced that she is very good at it, so I will have to keep working to change her mind and build up her confidence. I want to pass on the love of math that mommy and daddy share!!
We got together with our Chicago friends who now live in Arizona. (Chris & Toria Trendler, Josh & Melanie Wallbrecht, Ned & Melissa Resch) The kids and adults had a great time catching up at the train park in Scottsdale.

- We got a phone call from his preschool teacher and he was having some silly moments at school with his friends, Fisher & Maddox. We made some serious threats and lots of pep talks, which thankfully seemed to solve the problem. - Andrew's best friends are Maddox Tompkinson, Ben Nelson, Emmitt & Fisher Hawks. Half Marathon #9
February was unprecedented as far as my running is concerned! I ran two half marathons and beat my record both times. And I FINALLY did it under 2 hours!! Hallelujah! In college, I made a lifetime goal to run 10 half marathons. And I always secretly wanted to beat 2 hours, but it seemed like an unreachable idea for my body!
After running the one in San Diego, I decided to do 3 more weeks of training and run the half in Phoenix since I was already trained. Brandon is such a supportive husband and never even blinked an eye when I asked to go running, and when I came home, the house was usually cleaner than I left it. Bless him!
The last three weeks, I ended up running quite a bit with Brittany in my neighborhood (who was also signed up to run the PHX half) or my stroller-running buddies, Andrea & Cynthia. Sarah was out of town, and I didn't catch up with her until the week of the race. I wasn't sure if I should push it and try to beat 2 hours or if I should just relax and enjoy myself, and I was also debating on whether I'd run the race with Brittany or Sarah. Everyone told me that the course was easy with no hills, and that many runners get a PR on this course. About two days before the race, I convinced myself to try. So I decided I'd run as fast as I could for as long as I could and hope for the best, and not worry about anyone else. (Selfish, much!? Sorry, friends!)
Sarah and I paced fast the first 5 miles (around 8:30-8:45) and felt pretty good. Her cute family was cheering her on at multiple points along the course, so it gave us something to look forward to. There were lots of family members cheering people on, and the first few miles were a little emotional for me. I kept thinking about all of these people I was running with who had worked hard for something and were accomplishing a big goal! Moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, singles, etc. Thinking of all the possible stories and obstacles they'd overcome to get to that day was overwhelming for me. As far as my story goes - I'm a mom who is making a small attempt to do something for myself and not get completely consumed by having young kids. I try to be a good mom and to keep the focus on them as much as possible, but I also have learned that I need to take time to myself (or else I might just go a little crazy in the process!). I have also learned from Brandon that moderation is the key - not to obsess or completely remove any one thing in life, but practice self discipline and be flexible enough to roll with whatever life brings. He's a good partner in crime and very supportive of all my needs! (I didn't realize this post was going to get all sappy and deep.)
Anyway, Sarah and I stayed together until mile 8 when the 2:00 pacer caught up with us. She was definitely ahead of schedule, but it was a little deflating to know that I'd have to keep up with her in order to finish in under 2 hours. I lost Sarah at this point and tried to keep with the pacer's crowd. I stayed with them until mile 10 when I tried some gu/gatorade to give me a little energy, and then got behind the pacer and wasn't able to recover the distance. But as I was listening to RunKeeper in my ear, I thought I was on pace to finish under 2 hours - and thankfully I did! My official time was 1:59:14 and it felt amazing! Although, I did throw up again at the finish line - I am not sure how to shake that weird habit - I felt so good, and the rest of the day was restful and fun! It was also especially awesome to have my family there at the finish line to support me. I hope that our kids will have good memories of training with me and supporting me in my races, and that they will also have a desire to do set goals and accomplish them no matter how hard they may seem.

Nana's February Visit
Nana came down to visit, and we were very happy to see her! We did lots of fun things together - we went to the zoo and rode the train and camels (I am not usually so nice to let them do the extras!), we hiked a small mountain and played at the park, we colored pictures, did yard work, and watched the movie, "Up!", etc. It also worked out nicely that she was there and could babysit while I drove to San Diego for the race and Brandon didn't have to take a day off. Thanks, mom!!

2015 Goals
2015 Goals & Priorities
After writing this out and thinking about it more, I am very slowly learning that if I set vague "goals" that are not measurable, then they aren't really a goal, but more like a "priority" for this year. Ok, now I feel a little better.
Goal: Go to the temple more regularly - once per month
Family Goal: Read scriptures together as a family on a more regular basis
Priorities (in no particular order):
- Mental: Keep up to date on blogging and journaling
- Physical: Maintain a healthy lifestyle - go to the gym as regularly as possible and try to make "healthy" meals for our family and try new recipes that the whole family will want to eat
- Financial: Track expenses and budget bi-weekly (since I have been working, I have been more lax about our personal finances)
- Spiritual: Callings ~ Sunbeam Teacher & Girls Camp (June) Stake Staff
- Emotional: Wife & Mom ~ I'm going to think about what specifically I need to put here
2014 Goals REVIEW:
1. Read more & watch less TV (for me personally and also me with the kids) YES! I can say that I read more than the previous year, which is good, BUT my intention for this goal was to keep me more on task and steer clear of distracting activities, particularly during the evening hours. However, I found that reading a book was much more distracting & tempting to me during the day! Ironic how that works.
2. Format & print one blog book and edit 1 year of videos. Guys, I'm going to let myself off the hook on this one and save the formatting for when my kids are all in school - my main focus right now is just to keep up on the blog, and then I will figure out what to do with it later.
3. Emergency Preparedness (water storage & make 72 hour kits). FAIL!
4. Focus on the positive (tricky to measure this goal, but I want to work on this). Yikes! Hard to say - this was not a good goal considering that I never really thought about it and is too hard to measure. Lesson learned.
Our 2014 family goal is to establish regular chores for the whole family. AWESOME! Saturday is my new favorite day of the week when it starts off with chores! The kids don't complain as much anymore and dad pitches in a lot!

Can't Stop, Won't Stop
Brandon is still loving wood working and it is pretty much the greatest husband hobby of all time! I am super lucky!! And he really can't stop, won't stop. All the projects you see in the pictures below were done in the last six months (except the shed, which was done last spring, but I hadn't posted a picture yet).
The farmhouse table turned out amazingly and I love all the details! We are still decorating and adding finishing touches to the piano/dining room. But be sure to notice the plantation shutters in there that he finished last year (he ended up doing them in the main living area downstairs and in the master bedroom and he admitted that those were way too time consuming and probably wouldn't do them again). He just recently finished a bed frame for our room (something we have never had), and he did such a great job painting it too. He has just started using his scroll saw to cut small details, like the cubs sign and "love" in the heart sign. I am continually impressed by his ability to create all these things, and I am so happy that he found something that he genuinely loves and is passionate about.
- Farmhouse dining table
- Master bed frame
- Plantation Shutters
- Shed
- Signs
- Molding on staircase
- Board and batten behind front door for the backpacks
- Pergola
- Storage cabinets for holiday items and storage
- Storage area in attic (not pictured)
- Custom cabinets in garage over work bench
- Corner work bench
- Small furniture piece (in progress)
